What were the conditions in mental asylums during the late nineteenth century?

bedlam was the name of one of the earliest asylums. mad women and men did not have heat, clothing or birth control. it was chaotic. not medicalized as is today. a movie about the marquis de sade depicted these conditions. he had money so he could continue his activities in the asylum. he wrote a play about marat's ination and the others performed it.
