I can't get it to work on Vista!?

I'm trying to install duke nukem 3d on my vista laptop and i just can't get it to work. I had it on windows xp previously and that worked fine. I've tried using compatiblity mode for windows xp service pack 2, and I've set the program to run as me as the administrator. The game starts in MS DoS (i think) briefly and then i get an error message saying the system doesn't support fullscreen mode, and i then get the option to close the application or ignore the issue (which still doesn't open the program). HOW DO I GET THIS TO WORK...................???
