My husband, age 52, has tourettes syndrome. How can I best help him avoid outbursts?
I notice the words used vary depending upon the person(s) around him. for example, around his aged mother he uses "mother-f*****", which offends her greatly. With me he uses other words that can either be a turn-on or offensive. I also hear him using words that tip me off to things that might be worrying him deeply at the moment, like "credit card payment". Am I correct in uming these are subconsciously chosen words for the use with one person versus another? Does ignoring his minor outbursts lead to more objectional & profane outbursts, until he achieves a reaction from those around him? Or should I/we be asking him sooner to calm down? I really want to ist him to lessen them, if possible. What should I be doing?
